Next meeting on December 7, 2011 at our westside location

Hello everyone – TheDecember meeting of the Vancouver Parent Transition Group is on Wednesday, December 7, at our Westside location at 43rd and Arbutus. The topic of discussion will be “advocacy” -something that none of us are really comfortable doing. That said, it is becoming increasingly clear that we need more advocacy for the young adults with disabilities that we support. Whether it is just a small gesture, like signing your name on a petition or a significant contribution, like opening up to the press with our personal stories, we all need to play a part. To lead the discussion, we are delighted to welcome Leila Rahemtulla to our meeting on December 7. Many of you know her as a parent in our Transition Support group, but she is also a board director at BC Association of Community Living (BCACL), an advocacy group in our province. BCACL should not be confused with CLBC (provider of services to adults with disabilities). Also, you may not be aware that CLBC is NOT permitted to engage in any advocacy themselves (for example lobby for more funding). So we need to do that for them!

 In Leila’s words

“BCACL helps unify the voice of individuals, families and the local agencies to ensure they’re heard at provincial and national levels. There are many ways to advocate and so BCACL is part of the fabric of support that is out there. We also help foster connections within the movement, channel information to individuals and families, and try to ensure we are in the listening of individuals and families’ needs through ongoing dialogue and even sessions like these meetings.”

I hope you will join us. Newcomers not only welcome but greatly encouraged.

Place :  Pacific Spirit Community Health Centre

             2110 West 43rd (@West Blvd)

Time  :   6:30 – 8:30pm

Date  :   Wednesday December 7, 2011
