Last Meeting of the season for the Transition Group / June 2nd at 10:30am

Hoping to see you at our last meeting of the year. Our special guest
for this meeting is Lydia Kang who is the Planning Booklet
Co-ordinator for the Family Support Institute of BC. Lydia will talk
about the booklet that she has created and how it can be used for your
individual. The idea of the booklet is to give a “snapshot”
introduction about your son/daughter – for eg their likes/dislikes,
what is important, how best to support, abilities/skills etc, using
pictures, illustrations and bullet points. It can then be used, for
example, to give to support workers or agencies that you might connect
with.

After a brief introduction about the booklet, we hope to have a
‘hands on’ session where family members (and their youth if attending)
can be guided to fill out individualized booklets. These can be used
in a variety of ways both for exploring and expanding your knowledge
and as a great tool for talking about your child to others

We are also available to share knowledge regarding summer options at this meeting.

As always, we are so glad to be able to hold the meetings at VRS.
Families are encouraged to bring their youth, who can sit in on the
meeting or ‘hang out’ with each other.

We end with a pizza lunch which gives families, who are our most
important resource, a chance to mingle and share.  Please RSVP so we
can order enough food and please let us know if you are bringing a
youth that is graduating this year so we can celebrate together.

Date and Time Saturday June 2nd at 10:30am
Location 2006 West 10th Avenue (The Vancouver Resource Society building)
enter thru’ car park at the back of the building

See you there!

Next Meeting is on Wednesday May 2nd at 6:30pm

At the next meeting on Wednesday May 2nd, we are very pleased to have Jia Li from the Services to Adults with Developmental Disabilities (STADD) team come and talk to us about her role as “navigator” for the Transition Process. STADD is a Ministry of Social Development and Poverty Reduction initiative which provides transition support to youth age 16 to 24 with developmental disabilities. It has been in operation for almost 5 years in a lot of communities in BC, and Jia started last year in Vancouver in October 2017. The “Transition Process” is ongoing for most of our young adults, so the subject content will be relevant for those over 24 as well.

We will also cover “After Graduation” with Terry Schenkel from Developmental Disabilibities (DDA) giving information on community inclusion, employment and social programs at DDA.

Come and learn something new, share ideas and meet other parents/caregivers. .
